So my team and I just did the CUTEST project! We keep our families involved in school by having projects that students do at home with their families. We teach in class, they apply and create at home and wrap it up by sharing at school.
Our latest project was new for us and ended up with such amazing results! We tied in our non fiction reading and writing workshop, social studies and presentation skills. We had the students do an American Hero (Biography) research project.
First students researched their American Hero that made a major contribution in History.
They worked on their posters at home. They included facts, where we might see this person's image today, maybe photos, made the project look a little like their person and most importantly they made a hole to put their face as the face of this hero.
They practiced and practiced at home to present as if they were the hero.
Our team is really lucky and our grade level is in a "wing". We have a large space in the middle of all the classes were we can meet. On presentation day all students became their characters and we had a historical "party". They met other famous heroes and introduced themselves.
Of course we were a little worried about 100 students walking around with posters and this being successful- but the students took this VERY seriously. Our VP, RSP and reading aides stopped by and everyone commented on how this project was an ABSOLUTE keeper!!
We agree- it's a keeper! Total success!! =)
How do you do projects at school? We love new ideas!!
